Toppling Head
Project type
Sculpture
Date
April 2024
The sculpture is made of wood, steel, and wire. It is connected through the use of wood glue, nails, and welding. The steel is welded and fused to create the beginning form of a head. The wire connects this into the contour lines of the figure and only allows for a partial form to be seen. The wooden base is what keeps the sculpture from toppling and allows the head to stand proudly in front of the viewer. Scrap steel was bent into semi circles to create an almost chain-like effect at the base of the wood. Slowly these chains stagger out and dissipate.
The “Toppling Head” is a continuation of the use of the body within my work. Normally I focus on the hands or arms, but for this the use of a head in the permanent imobile state created the imagery I wanted. The head is not finished and sits on rough cut/split wood. The top is far heavier than the bottom. There is a distortion of the body within this piece, and a distortion of how one views themself. The steel bars cannot be moved, they can only be added to. The wood is rough, jagged, it could be sanded down, but that takes time and effort and patience that the viewer does not have.
