Broken Escape
The project consists of a wood frame, a wire and mesh skeleton, and a plaster and paper pulp skin. A layer of plaster soaked fabric was wrapped around the skin once dry. The process of layering took patience as each material had varying drying times. The wire and mesh skeleton were simple in maneuvering into hand-like forms while the paper pulp and plaster seemed to go against each other at times, although this allowed for a unique skin texture on some of the arms. The plaster soaked fabric created a large skirt and ripples that emphasizes the message of the project and creates an unusual form that flows into the tree-like structure above it. This creates two halves that oppose each other and work against the smooth and rough effect of texture. The project is colored in darks and lights continuing the theme of two halves. This duality creates an idea of something leaving or ending. The reaching hands are trying to escape the sculpture or are simply stretching out. The gold and beads that hug the skirt stay within its lightness and only gently reach the darkest of the blue, alluding to positives reaching negatives and helping these reaching hands escape or stretch.
