Artist Statement
As a sculptor I use a variety of materials and mixed media items in order to create my work. Oftentimes this includes wood, plaster, and castings of my own hands. The process for creating my work really varies depending on the project itself.
I often start with a sketch, then write out extensive lists on all the materials I may need. From there I start on the base of the work. Because my pieces are usually heavy or made with weighty items I always start with the base of the work. A strong base means a stronger, longer lasting piece. Then it becomes a play by play of building and breaking down and building again. In my piece, “Outer Beauty” the process of creation was tough and the piece itself had to be reworked a number of times. The sculpture includes the use of plaster cast hands, a large wooden structure, the use of mirrors and other found materials. The idea was to create a reflection of my own inner self and portray it in a
setting that was easy to see, understand, and digest.
My work revolves around the body, the abstract, nature, and a merging of all those ideas and influences. For a long time now hands have been a constant fascination and incorporation in my work and over the years the materials used have become more focused on woods, and plasters, and minimal use of color. I can’t fully explain why I use these items or the reasoning for how to place and interact with the materials, but I always enjoy the process and the completion of the work.
